The Adoption Collaborative at ICAR9
Jenny Ginger and Andrew Brown are excited to be presenting several research papers at the 9th International Conference on Adoption to be held in Porto, Portugal from 6th to 9th July.
Jenny will give two presentations based on her DPhil research:
“Is experience of parenting a birth child advantageous when parenting a child adopted from care?”
“The adoptive family life cycle: reconfiguring the theoretical framework to reflect the complexity of today’s families”.
On behalf of the Rees Centre, Andrew will present two pieces of work:
“Partnership, Practice and Belonging: Supporting Adopted Children at School”
"Transforming Adoption Practice for Children with Disabilities: Lessons from a Regional Pilot Programme"
Finally, Jenny and Andrew will co-present
“Adoption Research in England and Wales published in Adoption & Fostering: initial findings from a bibliometric analysis” .
Bridging Perspectives will bring together researchers, practitioners and adoptive families to develop a shared, nuanced understanding of some of challenges of adoption, and to co-produce innovative, practical approaches applicable in real-life situations that will support families.
We will host an initial online event to launch the project to families, adoption agencies, adoption charities and researchers. Then, using a safe, anonymous, moderated online platform, we will run a series of asynchronous creative collaboration sessions. This format enables participants — including those who may feel inhibited in formal settings or professionals wishing to challenge current policy and practice — to contribute openly and creatively without fear of judgement. Alternative non-digital participation options will be available for those preferring not to use technology.
The project will launch in September. Further announcements and details on how to participate will be posted here and on social media.

We are thrilled to announce that the Bridging Perspectives collaboration will be funded by Green Templeton College, University of Oxford.
